TIP!  Here are some things to consider when selecting your label size and material.  Keep in mind that on a curved surface the bar code needs to run up/down the vial, otherwise you will not be able to read it.  On flat surfaces the bar code can run either way.

  1. What is the smallest item you will be labeling?  This will help you determine the largest label size you can use.
  2. What info do you want to print on the label?  Identify the fields and their size, also which of those fields will be bar coded.
  3. If fields are bar coded, what symbology will you be using?  Will the field contain alpha and numeric characters?  How Many?
  4. What are the conditions and temperature at the time of labeling?  You will need to make sure you remove any dust and contaminants from the substrate or they will adversely affect adhesive performance.
  5. What are the conditions and temperatures the labeled product must withstand during its life?  i.e. Repeated freeze thaw cycles, -80C Freezer, Chemicals it could come in contact with.
  6. What is the labels life cycle?  How long is it expected to last?  Does it need to be removed cleanly at the end of its service?

Aside from these basic questions, you will also want to determine if specialty designs might be of value.  These would include multi-part, multi-up, and piggyback labels.

Multi-part labels are actually a single label that has slits dividing it into a number of useful labels.  Multi-up labels are similar, but divided by matrix that is stripped out, making them distinct labels.  Both are useful for labeling multiple items such as a sample and a retain package.

Piggyback labels allow for labels to be applied to a substrate and then have the label peeled off and reapplied to another substrate.  These are often used in chemical inventory applications, whereby the original label is applied to the chemical bottle.  After the bottle is fully used, the top-ply label is peeled off and placed on either a reorder or disposal request form.  Another example would be a 12 part label we did for sample collection.  This label utilized a large piggyback label that had the top-ply slit into 12 separate labels.  The entire label was printed and affixed to a test request form.  Then at the time of sample draw, the individual labels were peeled off and placed on the various collection containers.
